Waiting | Part Four: A Day of Reckoning

The Jews of Malachi’s day looked around and saw evil people flourishing and righteous people struggling. So they began to ask, “What’s the point of being faithful to the Lord…there is no benefit.” But Malachi reminds them a day of reckoning would come, so remain faithful and wait.

Waiting | Part Three: A Purpose and a Plan

Joseph was put in an awkward social position when his fiancée, Mary, turned up pregnant before their wedding day. It was pretty hard for anyone to believe the story about her child being from the Holy Spirit. So Joseph had to wait for God’s plan to unfold. What are you waiting for that has not yet come to fruition? And what are you doing while you wait?

Waiting | Part Two: Faithful to the End?

None of us likes to wait…for our flight at the airport or the drive-thru at McDonald’s. We also don’t like waiting on God…to bring peace in our family or answer a prayer. And when we grow tired of waiting on God and we don’t see the action we want, we sometimes bail out on God. If he won’t answer my prayer, why be obedient. But Malachi urges us to be faithful to the end so we can be rewarded on the day the Lord returns.

None of us likes to wait…in line at the grocery store or even for the stop light to turn green. We also don’t like waiting on God…to heal a disease or mend our marriage. And when we grow tired of waiting on God and we don’t see the action we want, we sometimes bail out on God. If he won’t answer my prayer, what’s the use in being obedient. This is the same struggle the Jews faced in Malachi’s day. How long are you willing to wait on God?

How To Deal With What You Feel | Part 1: Emotions Move Us

Some of us tend to repress how we feel. Others of us tend to express how we feel. But what does Jesus want us to do with what we feel. Emotions move us and drive us. The question becomes…Where are they taking us?

ReachinG Out | Part 4: Outside My Door

The world is full of people in need…so much so that we are often overwhelmed. Even if we have a desire to make a difference, it seems we can’t make a dent, so we do nothing. Jesus challenges us see what is right in front of us and take action.

There’s something about putting your feet under the same table that brings people together. Sharing a meal can generate conversation and break down barriers. Jesus often ate with those he wanted to reach…and we can too.

Meaningful and personal conversations about faith can be intimidating. Will they get mad? Will they ask questions I don’t know the answers to? Will it get weird? In John 4, we’ll learn from Jesus how to talk openly and non-weirdly about spiritual matters.

ReachinG Out | Part 1 - Through Parties

Connecting with people is often done through fun, laughter, games, or celebrations. Jesus routinely attended fun social events, and those events sometimes opened the door for discussions about faith. How can we connect with people by having fun?

None of us thinks we have a lot. We wouldn’t put ourselves in that category. But even a person on welfare in the U.S. has more than most people in the world. So what should we do with our lot? After Zacchaeus met with Jesus, he gave away half of what he had and repaid anyone he cheated four time over. Imagine the impact that must have had on people in his community who knew him. What kind of impact could we have on our community if we did what Zacchaeus did?

Having some might be the most dangerous place to be. For those who have little, they know they have to trust God every day. For those who have a lot, they have learned money is not where it’s at. But when we have some, we want to protect what we have. But what we learn from the boy who gave his five loaves of bread and two fish is that if we give Jesus our some, he can do a lot.

Many people feel like they don’t have much…like they are struggling to get by. While that is not true for everyone who feels that way, it is true for some. Some have very little money. But Jesus teaches us that he is not concerned with the amount we give…rather he is concerned about the heart and the percentage. If we have a little, we should give a little.

The Bible tells us the shedding of blood is necessary for the removal of sin…and the blood of bulls and goats, as required by the OT law isn’t sufficient. Jesus had to shed his blood so our sin could be taken away and we could be restored to God. The crucifixion appeared to be a moment of crushing defeat, but it was all a part of God’s plan.

When Jesus came onto the scene, the Jews had been waiting for the Messiah for generations. They were waiting on a deliverer. But they didn’t get the delivery they expected. They thought the Messiah would be a political ruler who would free them from Rome, but Jesus came to set them free from sin. Often Jesus doesn’t deliver what we are expecting from him either. But Jesus didn’t come to fix all our problems…he came to fix the problem of sin.

Divided and Conquered | The Kingdom's Fall

We, like the Israelites, try to satisfy the thirst of our lives by digging our own cisterns (money, status). While they might satisfy for a while, they always wind up going dry. Real and lasting satisfaction can only be found in the Lord. In the NT, Jesus calls himself “living water.”

Overcoming Gravity | Part 2: Proximity

One of the principles of gravity is that the closer two objects are to each other, the stronger the gravitational pull. In the same way, the closer we are to the church, the longer we’ve been a part of the church, the more involved we are in the church…the stronger the pull for us to stay within and not go out to share the good news of Jesus.

Overcoming Gravity | Part 1: Black Hole

A Black Hole has such strong gravitational pull that it draws everything in to itself, including light. The church can have a tendency to become this way. We are given the command to take the light of Jesus out to a lost world, yet we experience a natural pull to stay within. We wind up huddling together and focusing on ourselves.

David committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband Uriah, yet he is still highly regarded in scripture. Contrast that with Saul, whose two major sins are that he didn’t wait on Samuel to make a sacrifice and he didn’t completely wipe out the Amalekites…yet he is portrayed in a negative light in scripture. Why the difference? The difference is that when confronted with their disobedience to God, Saul made excuses and David repented.

David was a teenage shepherd. That had to be a boring job…nothing to do but watch sheep. All that practice paid off when he defeated the giant. Perhaps you feel nothing significant is happening your life. But is God preparing you for a task that has yet to be revealed?
