Matthew 4

Matthew 4

“While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’  Immediately they left their nets and followed him.  And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with their father, mending their nets, and he called them.  Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.”   18 – 22 ESV

Based on other accounts of the calling of the disciples, these guys had probably had some contact with Jesus before, so while it’s not quite the total surprise it looks like on the surface, it’s still pretty remarkable.  They left their livelihood, their family, everything they knew to follow Jesus into the unknown.  I can’t help but wonder how they would have reacted to the call if they had known everything that was going to happen.  Maybe it’s best they didn’t!  Anyway, following Jesus that day changed their lives forever.  They traveled with him, ate with him, watched him perform miracles, were commissioned by him and as time went by, participated with him in some of the most incredible actions recorded in the Bible or anywhere else.

Following Jesus is the greatest adventure anyone could ever hope for.  When we listen to him and follow his leadings, there’s no predicting where we’ll end up or what we’ll do.  It’s enough to know that he’s beside us all the way, providing everything we need to do what he’s called us to.  I heard somebody once say that where God guides, he provides.  I’ve found that to be true in my life, and I’m hoping you will too.  Let the adventure continue!

God, help us follow you without reservation or hesitation.  Lead and guide us, and help us be faithful to move with you on this great adventure you’ve called us to.
