“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold, wise men form the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’”
At this point, it had been over a year since Jesus was born. We don’t know how for sure, but the wise men had seen the indication of his birth and for several months followed the direction of the star all the way to Jerusalem. All for the chance to meet and honor and give gifts to this baby king they knew little to nothing about. They came at the risk of their own lives, and after they saw Herod that risk increased. They slipped away without giving away Jesus’ address, but what they experienced in Bethlehem had to have stayed with them for the rest of their lives.
Finding Jesus is worth the journey. Some people risk their lives for a relationship with him. Others take a long time to examine the evidence that he’s really the son of God. For some it takes an event that finally softens their heart and makes them look outside themselves for comfort and help. The great thing is that for us is that he’s not hidden away, he’s always right there, waiting for us to open ourselves up to a relationship with him.
God, may we have the diligence and commitment of the wise men as we not only search for you, but then worship you and give you not just our possessions, but our very lives.
