“And the men marveled, saying, ‘What sort of man is this, that even the winds and sea obey him?’” Vs 27, ESV
This is the fourth miracle performed by Jesus in this chapter, with another to follow. They range from healing people with various diseases to dismissing demons to this miracle of calming a storm while in a boat with his disciples. All of these show Jesus’ power over disease, over Satan and his henchmen, as well as his power over the creation he helped bring into being. Combined with the authority of his teaching in chapters 5,6 and 7, these miracles build the foundation for his true claim of being the Messiah that we’ll see later in Matthew’s writing.
We know the end of the story, so we have a great advantage over the people who were following Jesus in Matthew 8. Because we know the end, how much more confidence should we have that the one who can heal disease, drive out demons and calm the storm can also work in our lives to transform us from the inside out. Jesus is able to that in us if we’ll respond to his power, authority and love for us by following him. It will be costly (see vss. 18 – 22), but well the cost is well worth the reward.
God, thanks for giving clear evidence of who Jesus is. Help us respond by following him in every area of our lives, knowing that he also has the power to change and transform us as we follow him.
